This tribute to John Coltrane has been scheduled in conjunction with the Coltrane exhibition, November 15, 2003-January 15, 2004.
Violinist Billy Bang (b.1947) studied with Leroy Jenkins before co-founding the String Trio of New York. He has recorded with Sun Ra, Bill Laswell's Material, and Bootsy Collins. He can be heard on the new Thirsty Ear Records' release "Scrapbook" by William Parker's Violin Trio.
Bassist Joe Fonda is best known for his work with Anthony Braxton (1984-99), appearing on 14 of his recordings and acting as President of the Tri-Centric Foundation from 1997-99. He has performed and recorded with Dave Douglas, Wadada Leo Smith, and his own Fonda/Stevens Group. "There is more to creative mastership than the surface of satisfaction and political certainty. The music of Joe Fonda is part of a living tradition of belief and dedication. Future historians will be surprised at the breadth of Mr. Fonda's offerings. Drummer Gerry Hemingway has made significant contributions to the work of Anthony Braxton, Reggie Workman and Fred Hersch. Among his commissioned chamber works and electronic music, "Contigualis" for string quartet and "The Visiting Tank" for string quartet and live electronics were recently performed at Merkin Hall and released on Chamber Works (Tzadik Records).
