Sticks and Stones

Please join us on Thursday, July 22, 2004 from 8-10pm at Slought Foundation for a live concert by Sticks and Stones with Matana Roberts, Josh Abrams, and Chad Taylor.

Steeped in the art of improvisation, Sticks and Stones draws inspiration from the work of Jimmy Giuffre, Thelonius Monk and Feli Kuti. Preserving the spontaneous and raw energy of their weekly sets at Chicago's Velvet Lounge, Sticks and Stones has recently released "Shed Grace" (Thrill Jockey Records). It was recorded live to tape at Semaphore Studios with Ken B. Brown (Directions in Music, Tortoise, Pullman).

Josh Abrams (bass) is best known for his collaborations with Savath and Savalas, The Roots, and Town and Country. He has recently recorded "Cipher" (Delmark Records) featuring Tortoise's Jeff Parker. AACM member Mantana Roberts (alto saxophone) has performed with Steve Lacy, Henry Grimes and Ravi Coltrane, among many others. She is currently collaborating with Savion Glover and Reg E. Gaines on a John Coltrane/Eric Dolphy homage. Chad Taylor (percussion) is a member of Rob Mazurek's Chicago Undergroud Trio and Sam Prekop's Band. His ensemble Active Ingredients with Jemeel Moondoc and Steve Swell have recently released "Titration" (Delmark Records).
