Please join us on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 from 8-10pm at Slought Foundation for a live concert with the Bjorkenheim/ Picard/ Massey Trio, featuring Raoul Bjorkenheim (guitars, electronics), Simon Picard (tenor saxophone), and Chris Massey (drums, udu drum).

Raoul Björkenheim's early musical associations included 'Arbuusi' (1976-1980) as well as 'Roommushklahn' with saxophonist Jone Takamäki, pianist Jarmo Savolainen, bassist Antti Hytti and Nekljudow. He was a member of Edward Vesala's Sound and Fury Ensemble, which recorded and performed for much of the 1980s, resulting in classic recordings for Vesala's own Leo Records ("Bad Luck, Good Luck" and "Kullervo") as well as ECM Records ("Lumi"). As a result, Björkenheim participated in various projects such as 'Rinne Radio', led by saxophonist Tapani Rinne, as well as 'Krakatau', an experimental trio initially established with trombonist Jari Hongisto and Vesala. From 1986 through 1996, Krakatau facilitated Björkenheim's reputation as one of Europe's leading experimental guitarists. Following two albums on Finland's Hieronymus label, Krakatau made two highly-acknowledged recordings for ECM Records ("Volition" and "Matinale"), both featuring saxophonist Jone Takamäki and bassist Ulf Krokfors. Björkenheim has collaborated with many other experimental musicians including guitarists Nicky Skopelitis and Henry Kaiser, trumpeter Toshinori Kondo, keyboardist Paul Schütze, bassist Bill Laswell, drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson and many others. Currently, Björkenheim co-leads the Norwegian/Swedish ensemble 'Scorch Trio' with bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Most recently, he composed an installation collaboratively with artist Grady Gerbracht at Engine 27, New York.

Chris Massey is best know for his contributions to the work of guitarist Bill Frisell, guitarist/composer David Torn, bassist Steve Swallow, and Swiss guitarist Christy Doran. Massey's on-going projects include 'Trio Courage' with bassist Steve Swallow and John Mills as well as an ensemble lead by recently deceased poet Robert Creeley.

Simon Picard is one of the central figures within the European improvised music scene. He was a longtime member of bassist Barry Guy's' London Jazz Composers Orchestra', in which he performed with Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Marilyn Crispell and Tony Oxley. He has also worked extensively with such artists as Paul Dunmall, Paul Rogers and Keith Tippett.
