Patrick Brennan (composition & saxophone)
Newman Taylor Baker (drums)
Hilliard Greene (bass)
Steve Swell (trombone)

Patrick Brennen (alto saxophone, compositions) has been composing for, and performing with, versions of this ensemble (which has ranged in size from 3 to 15 musicians) since 1979. Most obviously influenced by Roscoe Mitchell and Ornette Coleman, he has developed over 50 compositions that explore the tension between traditional composition and collective improvisation. His latest recording as a leader, "Sudani," features Gnawan master Najib Sudani.

Newman Taylor Baker (percussion) has performed with Joe Henderson, Ahmad Jamal, Dewey Redman and Sam Rivers. His drum set is designed as a diatonically-tuned instrument, currently seven pitches.

Hilliard Greene (bass) is a member of Cecil Taylor's Phtongos and has served as Jimmy Scott's musical director since 1994. He has recorded with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Charles Gayle, and as a member of Dave Douglas' Sanctuary.

This program is made possible in part through the generous sponsorship or support of ars nova workshop
