"Spin & Drift furthers investigations of new possibilities in meticulous, organic group form. As a leader, Gress employs a superbly articulate bassist (himself), but his primary interest is composition and arrangement and collective concept." - Thomas Conrad, Downbeat

Leader Drew Gress (bass, pedal steel guitar) has recorded with Fred Hersch, Dawn Upshaw and Uri Caine. He continues to be one of the most sought-after bassists in contemporary improvised music.

Ralph Alessi (trumpet) attended the California Institute of the Arts where he studied with Charlie Haden and James Newton. Since moving to New York in 1990, he has recorded with Uri Caine's Mahler Project, Sam River's RivBea Orchestra, and Ravi Coltrane. He appears on Uri Caine's "Goldberg Variations" (Winter and Winter), Micheal Cain's "Circa" (ECM) and numerous Steve Coleman albums including "The Sonic Language of Myth" (RCA). He teaches at NYU and is the founder/director of the School for Improvised Music.

Tim Berne (alto saxophone) is devoted to the music and philosophy of Julius Hemphill. Thirsty Ear Records recently released Tim Berne's Science Friction's "The Sublime And" and will release a new album from his band Big Satan this year. He continues to record for his own Screwgun Records.

Craig Taborn (keyboard) appears on Dave Douglas's "Freak In," James Carter's "Conversin' with the Elders" and Roscoe Mitchell's "Nine to Get Ready."

This program is made possible in part through the generous sponsorship or support of ars nova workshop
