Please join us on Friday, September 10, 2004 from 8-10pm at Slought Foundation for a live concert by Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls with Jeb Bishop, Geof Bradfield, Jeff Parker, Clark Sommers, and Ted Sirota.
Trombonist Jeb Bishop has been active in new and improvised music in Chicago since 1993. He currently performs and records with groups including the Vandermark Five, the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Terminal Four, School Days, the Territory Band, and his own Jeb Bishop Trio. He also organizes and performs in the monthly Chicago Improvisers Group concerts at the Green Mill in Chicago.
Tenor/soprano saxophonist Geof Bradfield received his Master's degree at CalArts, studying with Charlie Haden, Albert "Tootie” Heath, Roscoe Mitchell, and Joe LaBarbara. He has performed with Jodie Christian, Marlene Rosenberg and Charles Earland, among others.
Guitarist Jeff Parker is a leading figure in Chicago's post-rock and creative music scene. He is best know for his contributions to Tortoise, Isotope 217 and Rob Mazurek's Chicago Underground Quartet. He has performed/recorded with Brian Blade, Fred Anderson, Roy Hargrove and Ernest Dawkins. Chicago Tribune columnist Howard Reich says, "Parker's work has a succinctness and self-assurance that distinguishes him from many other young improvisers. Not a note is wasted or extraneous, not a phrase is played without purpose and conviction". Jeff was most recently included in the Downbeat magazine article, "The Next 25", highlighting some of the hottest young musicians on the jazz scene today.
Bassist Clark W. Sommers has performed with Wadada Leo Smith, Vinny Golia, the Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra, and the Joe LaBarbara Sextet.
Leader/drummer Ted Sirota graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1991 while a member of the Last Kwartet (with trombonist Sara P. Smith, bassist Chris Lopes, and frequent companion Jeff Parker). Following his relocation to Chicago, Sirota began a two-year association with Eddie Kirkland and, in 1995, he became a member of a Chicago-based Sabertooth Jazz Quartet (which frequently appeared at the Green Mill) and, in 1996, Sirota formed his ensemble Rebel Souls. The members have included Parker, tenor saxophonist Geof Bradfield, cornetist Rob Mazurek, trombonist Jeb Bishop, and bassists Noel Kupersmith, Josh Abrams, and Clark Sommers. Sirota's first album, Rebel Roots, was recorded for the British Naim label in 1996, followed by 'Propaganda' (Naim Records) and Ted Sirota's 'Rebel Souls vs. the Forces of Evil'. In 2003, Sirota and the Rebel Souls recorded 'Breeding Resistance' for Chicago's acclaimed Delmark Records.
