Please join us on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 from 8-10pm at Slought Foundation for a live concert by What We Live Four with Larry Ochs, Lisle Ellis, and Don Robinson, with special guest Saadet Turkoez.

This San Francisco ensemble's formation was inspired by and a direct result of three musician's interaction within the context of The Glenn Spearman Double Trio, which performed and recorded from 1991 until the leader's death in 1998. Their initial vision was to bring together a small group of musicians to investigate concepts central to the tradition of improvisation - swing, song form, modalities, etc - in a less explicit manner than the mainstream but in a more emphatically traditional way than offered by the practice of free jazz.

As a member of Rova Saxophone Quartet, Lawrence Ochs (tenor/soprano saxophone) has made more than two dozen CDs and 30 tours to Western and Eastern Europe. He has performed with Terry Riley, Kronos Quartet, John Zorn, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, John Lindberg, Andrew Cyrille, Butch Morris, George Lewis, Henry Kaiser, Miya Masaoka, Wadada Leo Smith and many others.

Double-bassist Lisle Ellis has performed with the Cecil Taylor Unit, Marco Eneidi’s Sound on Survival and Paul Bley, among many others.

Since 1971, drummer Donald Robinson has worked with many of the leaders in contemporary jazz including Oliver Lake, Cecil Taylor, John Tchicai, Raphe Malik, Anthony Braxton and Glenn Spearman. In the early seventies he studied in Paris with Kenny Clarke and Alan Silva.

Guest artist Saadet Turkoez's vocal improvisations and performances of Kazakh and Turkish songs aim to transform memory. She seeks to evoke pictures and atmosphere by means of voice and music which transcend cultural boundaries. Memory is everywhere and every time the same - not changeable - but the expression is different: Individual perception develops a universal impression of the cultural life. In addition to my frequent solo concerts, Saadet regularly perform in duos, trios or bigger formations with free improvising jazz musicians - such as Martin Schuetz, Elliot Sharp, Werner Luedi, Eyvind Kang, Voice Crack- Nobert Moeslang & Andy Guhl, Peter Kowald, Gianni Gebbia, Michael Zerang, Carl Ruediger, Urs Leimgruber, Ikue Mori, the Koch-Schuetz-Studer Trio, Nils Wogram, Pascal Schaer, Mark Dresser, Miya Masaoka, Fred Frith, Xu Feng Shia, Peggy Lee, Alex Cline, Satoshi Takeishi and Graham Haynes.

This program is made possible in part through the generous sponsorship or support of the Arts Council of Switzerland, Pro Helvetia
