Dedicated to free improvisation, London saxophonist John Butcher has worked with John Steven and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Derek Bailey, violinist/electronicist Phil Durrant, and John Edwards. Current groups include, Thermal with The Ex guitarist Andy Moor and synth player Thomas Lehn, a trio with Fabrizio Spera and John Edwards as well as duos with Steve Beresford, Gino Robair and Toshimaru Nakamura. Butcher's conceptions are invariably built around techniques designed to overcome accrued musical and cultural baggage, utilizing a variety of invasive and exploratory processes, including cranked amplification, close-miking and overdubbing, in a bid to rethink the instrument. He frequently draws on the saxophones most peripheral capabilities, recasting fingering patterns in terms of percussive codes, turning naturally occuring acoustic phenomena into virtual accompanists and making expressive use of ghost tones and accidentals.
Drummer Gerry Hemingway has made significant contributions to the work of Anthony Braxton, Reggie Workman and Fred Hersch. Among his commissioned chamber works and electronic music, "Contigualis" for string quartet and "The Visiting Tank" for string quartet and live electronics were recently performed at Merkin Hall and released on Chamber Works (Tzadik Records).
