Bassist/composer Michael Formanek's intelligent approach to his instrument has led to an impressive range of musical associations. He was a member Tim Berne's Bloodcount as well as Relativity with Marty Ehrlich and Peter Erskine. He has collaborated with Stan Getz, Tony Williams, Gerry Mulligan, the Mingus Big Band, Attila Zoller, Bob Moses, and Gary Thomas, among many others. He appears, most notabley, on Fred Hersch's "Heartsongs", Uri Caine's "Urlicht/Primal Light", Elvis Costello's "North", and Tony Malaby's "Sabino". He currently teaches at The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
Based in St. Louis, trumpeter/composer Baikida Carroll became a major figure in the Black Artists Group (BAG) in the 1970's. He appeared as featured soloist on Julius Hemphill's first two albums, "Dogon AD" and "Coon Bid'ness", on Oliver Lake's first album, "NTU," on John Carter's "Castles of Ghana," on Muhal Richard Abrams' 1983 Down Beat Record of the Year, "Blues Forever" and on Jack DeJohnette's critically-acclaimed "Inflation Blues". He has performed and recorded with artists such as Dewey Redman, Oliver Nelson, Albert King, David Murray, Jay McShann, Amiri Baraka, Charlie Haden, Roscoe Mitchell, Dr. John and Anthony Braxton. He has also written scores for theater, dance, TV, and film including "The Mighty Gents" by Richard Wesley, "Eugene Sheen" by Malinke Elliot, and "Poem for a Revolutionary Night" by Larry Neal.
