Please join us on Sunday, February 20, 2005 from 8-10pm at Slought Foundation for a live concert with Marty Ehrlich and Michael Formanek.

As a high school student, Marty Ehrlich (b.1955) was actively involved with the community of musicians and poets influenced by the innovations of St. Louis' Black Artist Group (BAG). In 1977, he graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with George Russell, Jaki Byard, Joe Maneri, Gunther Schuller, and the legendary woodwind teacher Joseph Allard. Since moving to New York in 1978, Marty Ehrlich (clarinet, saxophone, flutes) has been at the center of the jazz and new music scene. He has performed in ensembles led by Muhal Richard Abrams, Fontella Bass, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Jaki Byard, John Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, Myra Melford, Roscoe Mitchell, John Zorn, and others. He appears on nearly 100 albums with these composers. Ehrlich has performed with the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the St. Luke's Orchestra, the Birmingham (England) Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Chamber Music Northwest. He has premiered compositions written for him by David Lang and David Schiff. He has also toured with the Jose Limon and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane dance companies. Since 1997, Ehrlich has been actively conducting and performing the music of the late Julius Hemphill. An original member of Mr. Hemphill's Sextet, he has continued the group as its musical director, touring with the ensemble. He continues to lead his own quartet as well as his Dark Woods Ensemble.

Composer/bassist Michael Formanek may have one of the most diverse biographies in contemporary improvised music. Spanning over 25 years, he has played and/or recorded with Tim Berne, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Marty Ehrlich, Chet Baker, Tony Williams, Gerry Mulligan, Kevin Mahogany, Fred Hersch, Marimolin, Dave Liebman, Uri Caine, Joe Henderson, Mark Isham, Mingus Big Band, Terumasa Hino, Cedar Walton, Attila Zoller, Eddie Daniels, George Coleman, Franco Ambrosetti, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Rosenthal, Bob Moses, Daniel Schnyder, and Gunther Schuller. In addition to playing the acoustic bass, Formanek also composes. His four recordings for the Enja label, 'Wide Open Spaces', 'Extended Animation', 'Low Profile' and 'Nature of the Beast' feature his compositions as performed by musicians such as Greg Osby, Tim Berne, Mark Feldman, Dave Douglas, Marvin 'Smitty' Smith, Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Marty Ehrlich, Wayne Krantz, and Jim Black. In 1998 Formanek released both his first solo CD, 'Am I Bothering You?', on the Screwgun label, and the debut CD by the Berne/Formanek Duo, 'Ornery People', on the Little Brother label.
