Gene Coleman

Coleman is a composer and the artistic director of Soundfield, a producing and presenting organization for new experimental music, with annual music festivals in Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. He also performs with Ensemble N_JP, a collection of musicians who work with Coleman on a project-by-project basis, uniting Japanese and US musicians from the traditional, experimental and contemporary classical music communities. His compositions focus on global culture and music's relationship with architecture, video and dance. In February 2007 he collaborated with the US State Department and the Kennedy Center on "The Tabadol Project", an ambitious concert and outreach project with 5 Lebanese musicians in 6 US cities.

Coleman has been composer in residence at the American Academy in Rome (2011), Shofuso House Philadelphia (2009), Westwerk in Hamburg (2007), Taipei Artists Village (2007), and Irtijal Festival in Beirut (2005), among others. Various groups have commissioned his music and film work and presented it around the world, including Klangforum Wien, The Japan Society, The Ernst von Siemens Foundation, Chamber Music Now, Network for New Music, Phace Contemporary, I-House Philadelphia, MoMA, The Crossing, and Maerzmusik Festival. He received the 2013 Berlin Prize for Music from the American Academy and has recently received a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship.
