Slought was located at 4017 Walnut Street in West Philadelphia, on the edge of the University of Pennsylvania campus. We were housed in a historic Deco/Beaux-Arts bank building from 1924. Our quiet storefront bordered 40th Street, a "linear mile" that runs from Walnut to Westminster Streets. Our programs responded to the uneven distribution of economy, community and social trust that surrounded us.
Our galleries were open to the general public from Tuesday to Friday, 12-5pm. Admission was free and no reservation was required. We looked forward to seeing everyone who came!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors were expected to follow our Social Contract, which included a vaccination requirement, wearing a face-covering at all times, sanitizing hands, and refraining from visiting if feeling unwell. Free PPE was provided if needed.
These guidelines followed recommendations set forth by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, City of Philadelphia, and University of Pennsylvania. They were regularly updated in accordance with evolving safety protocols at local and national levels. We closed for all local and national holidays, university recesses, and between installations.
