Jackson Mac Low
The pronouns: A collection of forty dances for the dancers
The Pronouns is an iconic collection of dance-instruction poems from 1964 by performance artist, composer, anarchist-pacifist, and poet Jackson Mac Low, who was famous for employing techniques of "systematic chance" in his writing. Each poem uses one of forty pronouns and a random combination of a limited vocabulary to create a script that one or more dancers interpret, thereby bringing the poem to life differently each time it is read or performed.

Erasures
This newspaper takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh's multi-volume set of photographs on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, entitled
The Erasure Trilogy and published by Steidl in 2015. Divided into three separate volumes—
Memory Trace,
Desert Bloom, and
Independence/Nakba—the photographs and accompanying texts seek to explore the legacies of the Arab–Israeli War of 1948, which resulted in the establishment of the State of Israel and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region. In addition, it features historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-'Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than eighty-five times in the ongoing "battle over the Negev."

Unpacking Derrida's Library
In this publication, philosophers Judith Butler, Hélène Cixous, Avital Ronell, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Hent de Vries, and Samuel Weber revisit the life and work of French-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida on the tenth anniversary of his death. Their recorded comments recognize his wide influence in the humanities and beyond. In addition, the publication also includes a booklet and audio recording from Jacques Derrida's seminar "Heidegger's Hand (Geschlecht II)" from 1985. The title evokes Walter Benjamin's famous essay, "Unpacking My Library," since "Derrida's Library" can include everything his writings set down, laid down, deposited, stored, received, collected, gathered together, and read. His idea of the book exceeded what we typically consider a book to encompass, and included all forms of writing and inscription, and even the relations between texts and the historico-political domain. This publication provides an opportunity to think about Derrida's many legacies and everything we have inherited from him and his work. Published in conjunction with a symposium at Princeton University in October 2014.

Soun-Gui Kim, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, John Cage
Art, or Listen to the Silence
In this publication, Soun-Gui Kim engages her collaborators — philosophers Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Nancy (Gwuang-jiu Biennale, 2002) and John Cage (Vieille Charité, Marseille, 1986) — in conversation about contemporary art and the relationship of artists to the globalized art world and market. Born in Pou-Yeo, Korea, Soun-Gui Kim has lived and worked in France since 1971, and exhibits internationally. She approaches the arts through Eastern philosophies, such as that of Tchuang-Tseu, and combines a meditative stance with Western philosophical interrogation. In this way, she poses the question: how does silence and resistance arrive? This trilingual DVD seeks to engage the artist's diverse communities, and has been subtitled and transcribed in French, English and Korean. Published in conjunction with the exhibition Beating The Market at Slought in December 2013, and at Artsonje Center in Seoul, Korea in April 2014.

Zoe Beloff
The Days of the Commune
In the spring of 2012, Zoe Beloff brought together a group of actors, activists and enthusiasts to perform Brecht's play The Days of the Commune (1949) in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. Rather than stage the play in a theater, the group performed the work, scene by scene, in public spaces around New York City, starting in Zuccotti Park. These public rehearsals ran from March through May, the months of the Paris Commune's brief existence in the spring of 1871. The Paris Commune was the first great modern Occupation, where workers turned their city into a progressive democracy of the people. Bringing this movement into dialogue with Brecht's radical restaging, and with contemporary social movements, Beloff asks us to image new possibilities for changing the world in the face of seemingly impossible odds. Four Conversations on the Architecture of Discourse
A new generation's interest in questioning the relationship between architecture and display is the catalyst for this publication, which moves beyond the biannual spotlight on the lagoon of Venice and the Venice Biennale to foreground other critical positions. The conversations begin with architecture's vexed relationship with its publics, and coalesce around a simple premise: architecture is something that problematizes its own display. The publication features four dialogues featuring fifty practitioners, including architects and designers, theorists and historians, editors and publishers, directors and funders, and students and professors. Topics discussed include the importance of cultivating critical and creative publics, and providing critical perspectives and methodologies that help mitigate the paucity of contemporary discourse on architectural display. They make legible the process of refining and rethinking one's practice on an ongoing basis and in discussion with others. Preview a

Evasions of Power: On the Architecture of Adjustment
This publication contributes to an ongoing discourse about human rights, war, extra- territoriality, and political and social enclaves, and will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in fields ranging from art, literature, and political philosophy, to architecture, design, and urban studies. Departing from academic conventions, the publication features diverse contributions by artists, architects, theorists, and curators whose work explores urban zones, state borders, enclaves, and extra-territorial sites throughout the world. Revealing an array of understanding about the consequences and implications of "spatial practice" today, the publication explores questions such as the following: how are questions of politics, conflict, and human rights articulated today in fields such as architecture and literary study? How is power theorized? How is power evaded? How can institutions aspire not just to accumulate power but also to evade forms of authority? William Anastasi, John Cage
The Cage Dialogues: A Memoir
Conceptual artist William Anastasi recounts the life and work of artist John Cage, his longtime friend and collaborator. The memoir is written chronologically, beginning with their first encounter and concluding with Cage's death. The narrative derives its structure from the game of chess, which was a metaphor for their friendship. For decades, Cage and Anastasi play virtually every day, and the psychological dynamic between them eventually becomes more important than their relative chess strengths.
Whether or not Cage or Anastasi wins, being together is unquestionably what is important. The publication also includes a facsimile transcription of John Cage's live performance of
You Are, a theater piece by William Anastasi, at The Clocktower in New York in 1977, as well as reproductions of selected works by John Cage and William Anastasi from 1950-2007. Preview a

Rewriting Perpetual Peace
For many politicians and policy experts, 'peace' is a poorly defined word that has many meanings in different contexts. With this in mind, the Perpetual Peace Project brings various disciplines and communities together to explore 21st century international priorities and prospects for reducing geopolitical conflict. Organized around Immanuel Kant's foundational essay Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch (1795), the project finds its public form in a series of initiatives including a re-publication of Kant's treatise, a symposium at the United Nations, an installation at the New Museum, workshops, and now this video publication, which features an array of philosophers, statesmen, and UN Security Council members in conversation about peace. The publication metaphorically rewrites Kant's treatise through seven segments exploring topics such as the politics and practice of peace, the idea and dream of peace, as well as the importance of cosmopolitanism and hospitality.

Theater of Transparency / 2000-2010
Theater of Transparency features three recent videos produced by Argentine artist Osvaldo Romberg, who employs and extends the practice of collage beyond its conventional deployment. These works explore the history of transparency and its relation to painting and electronic media, and were at the center of recent installations by the artist in the Mirror Room of the Neue Gallerie arn Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz, Austria (2008) and the museum balcony of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany (2009). These works -
Besame Mucho, Jesus de Buenos Aires, and Romeo & Julieta According to Romeo - were each projected alongside the protagonists of these narratives: a series of humanoid dolls and puppets made of transparent acrylic. Architecture on Display
The origins of the Venice Biennale of Architecture are generally traced to the 1970s. Since then, it has become one of the most prestigious forums for architectural discourse, and serves as a model for a range of international exhibitions.
Architecture on Display: On the History of the Venice Biennale of Architecture explores this history through the directors who established its particular discourse, including Vittorio Gregotti, Paolo Portoghesi, Francesco Dal Co, Kurt W Forster, Massimiliano Fuksas, Hans Hollein, Richard Burdett, Deyan Sudjic, Aaron Betsky and Kazuyo Sejima, as well as the current president of the Venice Biennale, Paolo Barrata. John Cage
How to Get Started
John Cage's first and only performance of
How to Get Started in 1989 was conceived of almost as an afterthought--a performance substituting for another that had been previously planned. In his performance, delivered at a sound design conference in Nicasio, California, Cage talks about the difficulty of initiating the creative process, and about improvisation, a subject about which he had long been deeply ambivalent. He proposes a collaborative framework in which sound engineers capture and subsequently layer his extemporized monologue, which consisted of ten brief commentaries on topics then of interest. This amounted to an experiment having to do with thinking in public before a live audience. The publication features an audio recording of the performance, with commentary by Laura Kuhn and others. Immanuel Kant, W. Hastie (translator), M. Campbell Smith (translator)
Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch (1795)
Immanuel Kant's essay
Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch (1795) takes the form of an international treaty exploring the possibility of permanent peace. Positing peace as an unnatural state that must be enforced by international laws and governing bodies, Kant effectively anticipates multilateral institutions like the United Nations and the European Union. Though the essay's ironic tone suggests the impossibility of this vision, one of its ultimate goals is to nevertheless challenge the politicians who mock the concept as 'a childish and pedantic idea,' and to create in their place a newly discursive space for discussing peace and international law. This publication, beautifully designed by Project Projects in New York and typeset in Aurele Sack, features a new printing of Kant's essay that builds upon historical translations and includes important but frequently omitted footnotes. It has been published in conjunction with
The Perpetual Peace Project, a partnership between the European Union National Institutes of Culture, the International Peace Institute, Slought, Syracuse University Humanities Center, and the United Nations University that joins theorists and practitioners in revisiting 21st century prospects for international peace. Inspired by the French-fold tradition of his time, it has been designed by the graphic design firm Project Projects as a workbook, with alternating blank pages to enable the rewriting of Kant's foundational essay. Tractatus Post-Historicus (1976)
Tractatus Post-Historicus (1976), a philosophical manifesto about the idea of "post history," as well as other early writings including
Why I paint like Pollock (1972), are newly reprinted in this comprehensive publication by and about conceptual artist Braco Dimitrijevic. His works are accompanied by accessible commentary by leading critics and curators, including Nicolas Bourriaud, Dan Cameron, Lóránd Hegyi, Jean-Hubert Martin, Catherine Millet, Achille Bonito Oliva, and others, as well as extensive reproductions of the artist's visual works and installations, in particular his ongoing
Casual Passer-By series (1971-). Working furtively in urban spaces saturated with messages of advertising and cultural industry, the artist hopes to transform and restructure the meaning of public images by inhabiting and defunctionalizing them. As with his work in general, he seeks to create another space, a counter-model to dominant thought, one that creates not just a reversal in meaning but also a rupture in perception. Preview a

Another Tomorrow: Young Video Art from Neue Galerie Graz
The young - and very youngest - positions in Austrian video art have been brought together here in a summation of the work now being done in the field of new media. Austrian media art has always taken up its own independent position with its socio-cultural, social, and media-analytical thematic subjects. Analytical approaches, entirely within the Austrian tradition of linguistic analysis and psychoanalysis, can be seen in many of the works presented here.
These works, part of the Neue Galerie Graz collection, recently on display at Slought, provide insights into the mechanisms of image production and perception today against the backdrop of film and video. In contrast to the sixties and seventies, and the hope that video could provide an alternative to standard television, these works reveal how the medium itself is dominated by the ideology of virtually uncontrolled consumerism.

Peter Weibel, Rewriter
This publication traces media and conceptual artist Peter Weibel's artistic developments from his beginnings through 1979. Weibel started out in 1964 as a visual poet, and was soon transferring the structures of the visual culture from the page to the screen, while still retaining the model of language as one of perception. Later, he developed a critical impulse that turned not only against art but also against society and media itself. This specific development - from the page via the screen to gallery space - all happening as early as the 1960s and anticipated many of the trends that were later to be described as conceptual art, context art, institutional criticism, and intervention. This publication features a selection of this work from the 1960s through 1979, including collaborative work with artist Valie Export, as well as extensive commentary. Preview a

Blood Orgies: Hermann Nitsch in America
Artist Hermann Nitsch has been visibly active since 1957, when he was associated with radical Viennese Actionists like Otto Mühl, Günther Brus and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. Then his artistic practice shifted from provocative "actions" in the late 1950s and 1960s to vast pageants that he organizes every summer in the courtyard of his princely castle. In was in 1971 that Nitsch brought Prinzendorf in the north of Austria, a huge farm and castle where he has housed many rituals, orgies, and ceremonies, and also keeps paintings. This publication features extensive documentation of his performances since 1962, including photographs, scores and manifestos, alongside commentary by scholars including Lorand Hegyi, Dieter Ronte and others. Each textual contribution addresses a different component of Nitsch's work, from performances to paintings and musical compositions, and provides both historical context and contemporary socio-political analysis. Prompting diverse considerations such as these, the publication provides a compelling structure within which we may engage Nitsch's work and debate questions about the possibilities for extreme art in contemporary life. Karen Beckman, Werner Herzog
On the Ecstasy of Ski-Flying
Director, screenwriter, producer and actor Werner Herzog grew up in a remote mountain village in Bavaria and never saw films, television or telephones as a child. During high school he worked the nightshift as a welder in a steel factory to produce films and made his first film in 1961 at the age of 19. Since then he has become one of the most influential filmmakers in the world producing, writing and directing more than fifty films, publishing more than a dozen books of prose, and directing as many operas. Werner Herzog has created some of the most fantastic narratives in the history of cinema, pushing himself and his crew to unprecedented lengths to achieve the effects he demanded. This publication documents a live conversation at Slought with Herzog and Karen Beckman, then Director of the Cinema Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. The dialogue imaginatively explores nine topics including aliens, ski-flying, Faust, the human race, solitude, audience, Buster Keaton and Fred Astair, Romanticism, and Hollywood. Democracy and Disappointment: On the Politics of Resistance
Much of philosopher Alain Badiou's life has been shaped by his dedication to the consequences of events of May 1968. Long a leading member of

L'Organisation Politique, a post-party organization concerned with direct popular intervention in a wide range of issues (including immigration, labor, and housing). This publication documents a live conversation at Slought with Badiou and fellow philosopher and friend Simon Critchley, Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York. Their conversation addresses the politics of resistance, and topics such as disappointment, heroism, and poetics, against the backdrop of the George W. Dennis Oppenheim, Willoughby Sharp, et al.
Tooth and Nail: Film and Video 1970-1974
In the early 1970s, Dennis Oppenheim was in the vanguard of artists using film and video to investigate themes relating to body and performance. This portfolio features a selection of his works known as the
Aspen Tapes, produced between 1970 and 1974 against the backdrop of a changing and volatile era, in which Oppenheim uses his own body as a site of experimentation on the personal. In these works the artist enters into an intimate and dynamic dialogue with his body as he explores the boundaries of personal risk, bodily transformation, and interpersonal communication. With these works, Oppenheim creates an alternative economic system, one allowing the artist "to become the material, to consider himself the sole vehicle of the art, the distributor, initiator and receiver simultaneously." With the publication of this portfolio in collaboration with the artist's studio, this seminal series of quasi-anthropological performances and ritualistic actions are newly restored and widely available for the first time. Vito Acconci
In Conversation at Acconci Studio, New York
Vito Acconci's early work took the form of fiction and poetry; his last poems reduced words to indices of the writer's and reader's travel across the page. In the late 1960's and the early 1970's, his artworks used performance, photos, film and video as instruments of self-analysis and person-to-person relationships. His audio and video installations of the mid-1970's turned exhibition-spaces into community meeting-places, and his architectural games of the early 1980's made performative spaces for viewers. In the mid-1980's, his work crossed over into architecture, landscape and industrial design, and in 1988 he started Acconci Studio, a theoretically-oriented design workshop. This publication, filmed at Acconci Studio, documents a lively conversation with the artist and undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. The dialogue addresses Acconci's artistic engagements with the experience of power, understood through the activation of specific bounded zones, and, more recently, the studio's treatment of architecture as an occasion for activity, making spaces fluid, changeable, and portable. Includes For Your Ears Only, a companion audio CD.

Hélène Cixous
Ex-Cities
As an author of fiction, a playwright, a professor, a theorist and a critic, Hélène Cixous has been a central figure in the profound reassessment of prevailing intellectual paradigms that has swept through virtually every domain of the humanities since the 1960s. Cixous is also an inveterate traveler in books, both those she reads and those she writes, in dreams, in languages, but also in reality. In
Promised cities, Cixous takes displacement and exile as her points of departure in exploring the relation of art and literature to cities and their destruction. "Literature," she writes, "is a field of destruction a field in ruins, the song of ruins, the archive song of ruins." Here the figure of the city is both a theme and a character, and literature is the very mechanism that permits us to rebuild cities from their ruins and to build new cities upon the memories of others. The publication features a bilingual edition (French/English) of
Promised cities, includes visual documentation of the installation
Vera's Room by visual artist and collaborator Maria Chevska, and a companion Audio CD of Cixous reading
Promised cities in English. Preview a

Rrrevolutionnaire: Conversations in Theory
Theory has proven disappointing not because it has not necessarily led to great social, political or cultural change, but because it seems to have been fully institutionalized. This publication reconstructs the production of a space at Slought in which theorists and critics thought out loud before a non-institutionalized "public." It is structured around seven conversations at Slought that were organized as part of the "Conversations in Theory" project and featured distinguished theorists and cultural critics in dialogue about contemporary art and life. Branka Arsic, Eduardo Cadava, Rebecca Comay, Gregg Lambert, Thomas Y. Levin, Dorothea Olkowski, Jean-Michel Rabaté, Avital Ronell, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Anthony Vidler and others engage in dialogue about topics including revolution, testing and torture, the future of feminism, the politics of mourning and the unfilmable. Includes photographs by Julio Grinblatt documenting the space of Slought, and an

The Revolt of the Bees
The Revolt of the Bees proposes a new culture of memory and archiving in the true spirit of the beehive. It takes as its starting point the assumption that modern memory is first of all archival, and that the beehive and the paper hive (an archive or library) both fancy themselves utopias in which modern memory is stored up, as honey or as knowledge. The publication revolves around eleven lessons extracted from a larger examination of beehive metaphors in the rare book and manuscript collections of the University of Pennsylvania. These lessons envision the archive of the future as an organization open to the infinite possibilities of its own becoming. The Revolt of the Bees also explores theories of curatorial innovation and approaches curatorial practice as an evolving and future-oriented field, prompting questions such as how one might renew or reinvent an archival collection by constructing a new genealogy around a historical concept, and to whom or what a curator is ultimately responsible. William Anastasi's Pataphysical Society
Conceptual artist William Anastasi engages literary and artistic predecessors including Alfred Jarry, James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, and John Cage, alongside scholarly commentary by Thomas McEvilley, Joseph Masheck, Steve McCaffery and others. Nearly 40 manuscript pages from the artist's "me innerman monophone" and "du jarry" projects are reproduced in the book, as well as reproductions of the artist's foundational works from the 1960s. By showing concretely that many passages in Joyce's Finnegans Wake contain buried allusions to Jarry's characters and vocabulary and personality, Anastasi is not simply annotating Joyce's masterpiece; he provides a new way of reading all avant-garde literature. If Jarry is shown to be somewhere in Joyce's texts, how can we be sure that he is not everywhere? Preview a

C's Aesthetics: Philosophy in the Painting
While recent aesthetics has rediscovered the historicity of art, aesthetics has not concerned itself with the implicit aesthetic positions championed by major practitioners. This monograph by art historian Joseph Masheck explores the seemingly elusive contributions of a painter, through and by means of his works, to aesthetics and the philosophy of art. For Masheck, a great artist such as Cézanne can be too famous for his own good if his or her thinking is packaged and retailed as little more than a single intellectual cliché. Accordingly, the author drops the name of this famous artist-genius to concentrate on what "C" was up to in his art. His point is not to discover the missing genius of late nineteenth-century philosophy whose propositions simply happened to take the form of oil on canvas, but to see how primary works of a great analytical thinker, within the discipline of painting, may amount to a major contribution to the philosophy of art. Of the Diagram: The Work of Marjorie Welish
Since the late 1970s, as a poet, painter and art critic, Marjorie Welish has cultivated a position of independence from fixed schools or tendencies and has premised her work on the relentlessly self-interrogative question: What needs to be done now? What would be an art in consequence of that question? The criticality evident in her answers joins demanding inquiry with clever playfulness. Although Welish encourages re-thinking classifications and codifications,
Of the Diagram orders contributions with the reader new to Welish's work in mind. By assembling art critics and literary theorists, poets and artists, architects and art historians, this collection of essays manifests the ongoing conversations in Welish's work. Preview a

Cities Without Citizens
What is the relation between a city and its inhabitants, between a city and its citizens, or between a city and all the people from which it perhaps withholds its protections? What is citizenship and how is it established or lost, asserted or taken away? These questions have become more urgent than ever because of the permeability of today's city, and its relation to the expanding forces of capital, globalization and information technologies. Seeking a democracy that would exist beyond citizenship and citizenry, the contributors to this publication ask us to invent the city anew, and to invent a sociality that is not determined in advance by belonging to a community, a state, a nation, or even just a language. Contributors include Giorgio Agamben, Eyal Weizman, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Thomas Keenan, Deborah Gans, and others. Includes archival material about citizenship in early America from the archives of the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia. Preview a

Untitled (After Cinema)
Today the digital is perceived as capable of annihilating all earlier modes of representation through their assimilation. Yet the digital is not central to this publication; instead, the central focus here is a medium that not
after cinema, but
before it—photography. This publication features 28 photographs by artist Stefan Abrams of scenes from iconic films by Jean-Luc Godard, Sergi Eisenstein, Frederico Fellini, and others. Film theorists Mary Ann Doane and Edward R. O'Neill, whose extensive commentary accompanies these photographs, suggest that Abrams's novel ways of using images affect the way we think about the image in cinema, and more broadly in visual culture and cultural consumption. Interestingly, the power of Abrams's images do not depend upon our memories of the iconic films whose single frames they mobilize. Rather, it is because rather than something being remembered, something is being interrogated as a memory that will not live again in our bodies: cinema and photography as they were and may never be again.
