A screening room for programming about media arts, activism, and mediated experience
A film program about American masculinity and gender socialization
Slought is pleased to announce a program about American masculinity and gender socialization on September 25, 2017 from 6-8pm. Organized with the Men Can campaign of Lutheran Settlement House and the Health Ecologies Lab at Penn Social Policy and Practice, the event will feature a screening of Jennifer Siebel Newsom's The Mask You Live In (2015), a documentary about the ways that boys and men are harmed by traditional gender socialization, and the violence that is promoted by it.
The Mask You Live In goes beyond just understanding this experience, and into what we can do to make a change. Men Can is an initiative of Lutheran Settlement House aimed at getting more men to speak out against Intimate Partner Violence. We see this violence as a learned behavior, one that can be unlearned and prevented in the future. Please come ready to not just watch the film, but to engage in a dynamic discussion about changing this culture of toxic masculinity.
