An exhibition with Fazal Sheikh tracing the dispossessions and displacements of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, and their impact on Palestinians, Bedouins, and Israelis
A series of programs that brings the Erasures project back to the communities most directly affected by the issues it raises
Slought, Al-Ma'mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center are pleased to announce Erasures: On Memory and Forgetting, a series of programs that brings the Erasures project back to the communities most directly affected by the issues it raises, beginning September 7, 2016 and September 8, 2016.
Erasures: On Memory and Forgetting takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh's Memory Trace and Desert Bloom, the first and second volumes of his three-volume photographic project on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Published in the spring of 2015, The Erasure Trilogy seeks to explore the legacies of the War of 1948, which resulted in the dispossession and displacement of three quarters of the Palestinian population, in the establishment of the State of Israel, and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region. In addition, historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-'Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than one hundred times in the ongoing "battle over the Negev" will be shown at Al-Ma'mal.
Elements of this project have been exhibited at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, and are now presented at the Al-Ma'mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in East Jerusalem and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. Together, this decentralized network of institutions, each functioning in different arenas and with different mandates, collectively seeks to generate conversation across different sites, contexts, and communities about the politics of dispossession and displacement.
Two publications, conceived as portable archives, will also be distributed. The first, prepared in English, Hebrew, and Arabic for Al-Ma'mal, provides contextual information about the photographs and materials featured in its exhibition, and will be distributed at its opening on September 7, 2016. The second, prepared in English and Arabic for Sakakini, will be distributed as an insert in the daily newspaper "Al-Ayyam," and will be presented and displayed at Sakakini at its opening on September 8, 2016. In so doing, we hope the newspaper will reach communities that have directly experienced much of what is detailed within the histories documented in Memory Trace.

On the occasion of the opening, Al-Ma'mal will host a discussion that explores and discusses the work on display.
Participants include Eduardo Cadava, Emily Jacir, Aaron Levy, Tamer Nafar, Jack Persekian, and Fazal Sheikh.
The discussion will be followed by a performance by DAM.

Fazal Sheikh will deliver a lecture on his work at 6:30PM, followed by a discussion with Eduardo Cadava.
