A research initiative and archive about the lives and experiences of 1001 Chinese participants who traveled to Kassel, Germany for Ai Weiwei's project "Fairytale" (2007)
We welcome individuals interested in working with us to realize the research initiative and online archive
We are looking for individuals interested in leading workshops in schools, cultural organizations, cafes, and other civic spaces. Whether you are a beginner Mandarin speaker, taking German evening language classes, a professional translator, a bilingual/ trilingual speaker, or simply interested in cultural dialogue, we need your help.
Our first public workshops took place from August 6-October 11, 2011 at Slought in Philadelphia, on the occasion of the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Convening in Philadelphia. Since then, workshops have been organized in the United States, Asia, and online. Our most recent workshop took place on February 23, 2014 in Hong Kong.
Our next workshops will also take place in Hong Kong throughout the month of November 2014 and will continue the work we began to undertake in 2011. We remain committed to re-establishing contact with and documenting the lives and memories of the 1001 participants who originally travelled to Kassel, Germany, many for the first time leaving their home and country. We hope to interview as many participants as possible, and to record the vestiges of individual and collective memory they have left behind.

We are trying to re-establish contact with participants in Ai Weiwei's 2007 project Fairytale. The project involved 1001 Chinese citizens of diverse ages and backgrounds from different regions of mainland China.
If you were part of this project, or know someone who was, please contact us. We would like to re-interview participants following the occasion of its fifth anniversary.
